3 Some sound fluctuations

-

+ Brucebase: Opening night of the 'Tunnel Of Love' tour. Debut of 8 songs from TOL as well as 4 other previously unplayed tracks, as well as Be True, which has had only one other public outing before.

-

+ The Boots: After six weeks of rehearsals, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, along with the Horns of Love (formerly the Miami Horns), began the 1988 Tunnel of Love Express Tour.  Bruce developed a concept show about relationships, which meant that the set list changed very little over the next several months. This show was chosen (to top 55 shows ever -ev2 note) because everything was fresh and new, and because of the amazing keyboard intro to "Walk Like a Man," which was not played after the tour left Worcester. This show featured the debut of eight songs from Tunnel of Love, four additional previously unplayed songs, and "Be True," which was played only once before, as well as an acoustic "Born to Run."

.-

+ More Info: From Mark P's master tapes. (Thanks). I had this planned for editing a long time ago, but edited this once, sound wasn't good enough, burned it and lost it. Thanks to a couple of guys on SPL (you know who you are) I got the files again and edited from scratch. I compared this to one of the previous 2/25 recordings and although they sound pretty much alike, this one was probably just a bit better. There really wasn't much of all difference. The sound really isn't as good as I'd like it to be and the only reason I'll let this one get out there is that this really is a special show.

+ Brucebase (31.12.1980): Soundboard tape. Last known version of "Rendezvous" until 1999 and the live premiere of "Held Up Without A Gun". A tremendous show and one of the longest known with an astonishing 38 songs. The soundboard recording is released on CDs "Nassau Night" (Crystal Cat) and "Midnight Lightning" (Seagull) and on CDR "In The Midnight Hour" (Great Dane). Audio recording of “4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” from this show was officially released on the Live 1975-85 box set. In addition, that night’s performance of “Merry Christmas Baby” was officially released on 7”/12” vinyl in 1986 (as well as on the Very Special Christmas Various Artists benefit sampler LP/CD); “Rendezvous” was officially released on Tracks in 1998, and “Held Up Without A Gun” was officially released on the Essential Bruce Springsteen bonus CD in 2003. About 14 minutes worth of amateur film footage shot from the audience - including “In The Midnight Hour” New Year’s countdown and the first seconds of 1981, with Bruce spraying champagne all over the front row - is circulating among collectors. Thanks to Lost In The Flood for the info.

A 26 track professionally mixed master recording is also available but many songs have fadeouts. There is also a whistling / whining noise audible during quieter moments. However, it does include the complete "The Price You Pay" - the closing harmonica solo is edited on Crystal Cat's "Nassau Night". This recording was mixed by an assistant engineer at the Record Plant and here's the information directly from him: "I was working as an assistant engineer at the Record Plant, and we recorded a number of shows on the tour for a live album. When they came back to Los Angeles, Toby Scott was starting to mix. I asked him if he would allow me to do a mix and evaluate my skills. He let me use the 24 track masters to do one song. He liked what I did and said if I want to play some more I could. I had forgotten about the tapes until a few days ago while going through some old boxes." Available on: "Nassau Coliseum - From Master Tapes" (Ev2).

+ Brucebase (07.03.2003): Audience tape - Show includes a one off-cover of the Beatles' "Tell Me Why", as well as a rare "Roll Of The Dice" and and stunning solo piano "Jersey Girl". "Mary's Place" includes a very short snippet of "Land Of 1,000 Dances". Bruce takes a moment after "Empty Sky" to explain the song's "an eye for a eye" lyric. See Johanna's Storyteller for more. Released on CD "Atlantic City Night" (CC) and also on "Atlantic City Remaster" (Red Coat), and available on another unattributed CD set. Most recently released as "The Tables Are Waiting" (Uber #40), an excellent IEM/AUD mix. The sound-check exists as an IEM feed - with a lot of drop-outs.

-

+ More Info: Obviously, the audience recording from this show was one of the best audience recordings, basically, ever.  The taper should be highly commended for his work on that night.  There were several times that I considered scrapping this because I wasn't sure if I was actually improving the sound quality.  I went ahead and continued with it if only so that I could have the opportunity to listen to one of the best shows of the Rising tour many, many, many times.  As for whether it is an improvement may be up for the individual listener.  The keyboards and percussion are a bit higher, as are the vocals in some places, and I hope I didn't lose any of the ambience from that special night in the process.
